Establishment of a universal testing platform

Project description

The decarbonisation of our energy system relies on the continuous advancement of energy technologies. Many innovative solutions are initially developed in laboratories or on a small pilot scale. For the subsequent stages of development, early testing under realistic conditions, as well as scaling up to larger capacities and system sizes, is essential.

In this project, we establish a comprehensive testing infrastructure for large-scale installations at the Wunsiedel Energy Park – particularly in the fields of hydrogen, bioenergy, and heating and cooling technologies. The platform enables industrial partners to further develop innovative technologies and to test them under real-world operating conditions, while also enabling the seamless integration of our own test facilities. A central control room equipped with modern process control technology ensures the overarching control and monitoring of all testing processes.

A particular focus is placed on investigating the dynamic operation of individual components and their interaction within coupled energy systems, with the aim of specifically improving both the efficiency of individual components and the overall system efficiency. At the same time, the infrastructure enables the development and validation of innovative sensor technologies as well as advanced control and automation concepts under real conditions. The data generated in this context forms the basis for digital twins and data-driven monitoring and optimisation solutions for future energy systems.
