Guided tours of the Energy Park
A successful energy transition requires more than just the expansion of renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar energy and biomass. It is also crucial to manage their volatility intelligently and to achieve sector coupling – that is, the integration of the electricity, heating, transport and industrial sectors. The aim is to transfer energy generated in the electricity sector to other areas, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels and, in the long term, phasing them out completely. Hydrogen plays a key role in this.
The town of Wunsiedel in Bavaria has been consistently committed to renewable energy for over 20 years. Through its holistic ‘WUNsiedler Weg Energie’ approach, the town demonstrates how regional potential can be utilised efficiently and how sustainable solutions can be created through successful sector coupling.
A central element of this approach is the Wunsiedel Energy Park. It serves as an innovation and demonstration site where modern energy generation, storage and utilisation are brought together and tested in practical applications. A battery storage system, various power-to-heat applications and digital energy management systems are located here. In addition, companies, start-ups and research partners from the fields of renewable energy, hydrogen technology, energy storage and smart grids are based in and around the Energy Park. The Energy Park therefore not only contributes to regional energy supply but also serves as a real-world laboratory and a model for other municipalities and industrial sites that wish to actively implement the energy transition across sectors.
Bavaria’s most powerful electrolyser is also located at the Energy Park. Here, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using modern PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis, powered by environmentally friendly electricity from wind and solar power plants. The hydrogen produced is then used in industry and for transport.
The plant is operated by WUN H2 GmbH and is currently the largest green hydrogen production facility in Bavaria. With a rated capacity of 8.75 megawatts, it produces up to 1,350 tonnes of green hydrogen annually – a milestone for the climate-neutral energy supply of the future.
